Sculptural Forms

I have spent the last year creating a series of unique sculptural works for the home. These were originally intended to act as baskets, as shown in the image of ‘Crudha’ (Scottish Gaelic for horseshoe) below. During my developmental process however, I became interested in the sculptural element of each form, and have created a collection that blurs the lines between functional and sculptural use.

Using skills learned from my time studying traditional clinker boatbuilding, I steam-bent wood into open forms before combining with my signature woven leatherwork.

Locally-sourced Scottish Oak wood sits alongside Italian vegetable-tanned leather in a combination that I feel celebrates my heritage and culture in the West Coast Highlands.

Each piece is titled after its unique shape and named in Scottish Gaelic.

These works are currently available to purchase. Please enquire here.

Las

Las, the smallest in this series of works, uses vintage nylon from the 1960’s to create a strong, yet delicate looking, geometric pattern along the curved outer face of the basket. This bold exterior contrasts with the smooth, oiled Scottish Oak interior. She resembles a flame, or teardrop in her shape.

Las can be seen in person and purchased from Scotland’s home for contemporary craft: BARD in Leith, Edinburgh.

Cruinnich

Cruinnich is the only piece within this collection to feature a perfectly rounded handle, creating a full circle. The handle is attached with solid brass fittings which compliment the light fawn tone of the thread.

Crudha

Crudha marks the largest work I’ve ever undertaken. She also combines two of my favourite colours: a bold, cobalt blue and a rich, bright burgundy, in an unsual and beautiful pairing. This combination is brought together sensitively with a warm, chocolate brown thread.

Crudha is available to purchase directly. For further details please contact me at hello@iseabalhendry.com

Làn

Làn is the most ambitious, labour-intensive work I've made. These works are all unique, but no more so than this piece which uses vintage plant-based fibres, carefully repaired strand by strand.

She is made up of two shades of blue, both dyed with the same vegetable-tanned process, yet finished differently. One shade has been oiled to create a lightly glossed, bold and bright blue, while the other is left soft, supple, matte and lighter in shade. This pairing is offset with the off-white, linen tone of the stitching.

Làn is currently being held for an exhibition in September at Bluecoat Display Centre in Liverpool, where it will soon be available for purchase.
